Re: Fuel Hose Replacement
Dear Ski-Doo® Owner,
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the Consumer Product Safety Act, the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Act and other applicable laws.
Which models are involved?
2005 Expedition TUV 600 H.O. SDI
2007 Skandic SWT V-800
2008 Skandic SUV 600 H.O. SDI
2008 Skandic SWT V-800
2009 Skandic SWT V-800
2010 Skandic SWT V-800
What is the potential problem?
In April 2008, BRP made a safety recall (bulletin 2008-17) to replace fuel hose. The replacement fuel hoses supplied to BRP for this recall and for production of some later models may not meet the electrically dissipative requirement.
Usage of none electrically dissipative hose on listed model may lead to fuel tank explosion and potentially cause serious injuries or even death if the vehicles are exposed to the following conditions. Under extremely cold and dry weather (temperature of less than -30°C (-22°F) and less than 50% relative humidity), electrostatic charges may accumulate on components within the fuel tank when the engine is left idling. At a certain level of accumulation, charges could dissipate suddenly, sparking in the vapor space volume of the partially filled fuel tank, igniting a combustible mixture of gasoline and air and therefore causing an explosion.
Normally the air/fuel ratio of the vapor space of a fuel tank is overly rich in fuel thus inhibiting ignition of the mixture. Usage of fuel inappropriately stored or stored for long period can have the effect of lowering the vapor pressure characteristic of the fuel and therefore allowing the vapor space mixture in the fuel tank to reach the ignitable air/fuel ratio range, which became a significant factor in the explosions possibility.
To confirm that your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is affected, contact your authorized Ski-Doo dealer or BRP at 1-888-272-9222 between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Eastern time 7 days a week.
What is the reason for this notice?
In cooperation with Transport Canada and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Bombardier Recreational Products Inc. and BRP US Inc. (“BRP“) are conducting a voluntary safety recall of certain Ski-Doo models. Our records indicate that you are the owner of a potentially affected vehicle.
What should you do?
Immediately stop using your vehicle, call an authorized BRP dealer and make an appointment to have your vehicle repaired. He will replace the current fuel filter assembly of the fuel feed line to the engine with a new assembly in which the hoses and quick connectors feature components having the appropriate electric conductivity characteristic.
This will electrically bond the components of the fuel delivery system and connect them to ground via the fuel filter bracket that is fastened to the chassis. This mechanism of dissipating electrostatic charges to a ground source, as they are created, prevents electrostatic charge accumulations to the level where they might spark discharge and cause an explosion.
The dealer will perform this work at no charge to you.
What to do if you feel this notice is an error?
